The purpose of the outreach committee is to make contact with organizations or groups of people who have a need for help. Be it local or global we want to use our resources to help others who are in need. Our ministry accomplishes this on a local effort by making monthly runs to St. Eulalia’s food pantry to deliver items brought by our parish. We also do a large thanksgiving drop off in November. We also partake in gift giving to Lawrence Hall via organization from Ellen Busch.
We provide a venue for our local area homeless program BEDS, not only for a Wednesday night shelter, but also for the BEDS day program which attempts to assist our homeless brothers and sisters, many of whom are veterans, with needed social services. We also provide a home for many Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve step programs.
On a global level we have for the past seven years developed a relationship with St. John’s in Melut, South Sudan. For the past four years our funds raised from the Global Care 5K has been committed to helping these individuals in South Sudan who have very little access to clean water and healthcare. In 2012 we have partnered with Medair to help facilitate getting clean water and healthcare to this area in Melut. We also hope to continue our relationship with St. Johns.
On a funding level, for years Emmanuel has given money raised through our Annual Antique show to local outreach and charitable entitites including Helping Hand Center, Community Nurses Association and Pillars. We also operate a Trust fund in honor of David E. Weaver IV, the son of our former rector, who was tragically killed. Each year that fund donates at leat $2000 to local entitites who are serving the needs of children. We have provided scholarships for kids to attend camp at Brookfield Zoo, the Children's Theatre of Western Springs and local rugby and football clubs.
This ministry is important for the obvious reason that if people are in need and we at Emmanuel can help then as Christians we should. This ministry also helps us to connect spiritually at the church and as well as making valuable connections with the wider area.
We always encourage new people to join the Outreach Ministry allowing us fresh perspectives and ideas.
